The same groups apply to both men and women. Underweight: BMI is less than 18.5. Normal weight: BMI is 18.5 to 24.9. Overweight: BMI is 25 to 29.9. Obese: BMI is 30 or more

The body mass index (BMI) or Quetelet index is a value derived from the mass (weight) and height of an individual.  Commonly accepted BMI ranges are underweight: under 18.5 kg/m2, normal weight: 18.5 to 25, overweight: 25 to 30, obese: over 30.

But in recent years, more researchers argue that it's not the most accurate way to measure body weight. For years, scientists have said that BMI can't distinguish between fat and muscle, which tends to be heavier and can tip more toned individuals into overweight status, even if their fat levels are low.
